Acne

Unlucky with acne?

Does your acne get worse the more you try to fix it?

Acne can affect up to 1 in 5 men, women and children in New Zealand. Each of us can get the occasional pimple, but not everyone experiences ‘acne’ which is a seemingly uncontrollable process of perpetual irritation, oiliness, congestion and unsightly angry blemishes. Sometimes the more we try to stop this cycle, the worse it becomes.  Our acne programs have a high success rate of up to 80% and we have a range of options to help.

The aim of our acne programs is to:

  • Clear existing break-outs.
  • Relieve congestion that causes new break-outs.
  • Prevent new break-outs.
  • Clear blemishes, redness and the area affected.
  • Prevent visible skin damage and scarring.

  • Home Care

Each acne program is tailor-made for the individual client and may contain a number of treatment modalities. It may include some or all of the following:

  • Microdermabrasion
  • Medi-aesthetic peels
  • Essential home care products
  • Laser treatments

All of our staff: doctors, nurses and dermal technicians are trained in a uniform approach to the analysis and resolution of acne. We provide professional education programs in acne management throughout Australia, New Zealand and Europe. We devise a personalised acne management plan for each patient tailored to address their specific concerns.

Acne can be resolved through unblocking pores,  releasing oil build up and through the removal of factors that drive the cycle of irritation, oiliness, congestion and blemishes.

What Causes Acne?

There are many factors that contribute to blemishes and irritation, commonly called acne and unfortunately we cannot control all of them. Natural oils from the skin build up beneath the surface and then become infected. This creates blocked pores and leads to acne.

The blockage can be caused by:

  • Dead skin cells
  • Stress
  • A build up of make-up or creams
  • Grease or oils (e.g. where a person works in a kitchen or car garage)
  • Dust and dirt
  • Dead skin cells

As top layers of skin are shed, skin cells from the deeper layers of the skin move towards the surface. They then move upwards, progressively flatten and become drier as they die. Dead skin cells should fall off the surface of the skin but sometimes they need help, as the “glue” that binds the cells together is very effective.

Using a combination of skin care products which soften the glue and then remove the dead skin cells plus deep cleaning of the skin and further removal of dead skin cells with micro-dermabrasion, we have been able to achieve very rapid and dramatic improvement in acne – usually clearing up the majority of blemishes within three months.

Do Creams & Oils Affect Skin?

Certain skin creams and oils such as moisturisers and sunscreens, applied to the surface of the skin may increase the amount of oil present which in turn further blocks pores. People with acne should only use the skin products recommended by their skin technician, which can assist in maintaining skin’s hygiene and preventing further congestion.

Most cosmetic foundations consist of particles suspended in a cream base. The cream is bad for acne, but the particles are also bad as they enter the open pores and add to the dead skin cell plug obstructing the pore. Institut Make-Up is talc free, oil free and is non-comedogenic (which means it will not block the pores) – this is why we recommend its use.

Acne Home Care

Skin care is a vital part of our acne programs and all our in-clinic care for acne need home based care to keep up the results.

Each client is individually assessed and a number of factors are taken into consideration in developing a tailored home care regimen. Our dermal technicians may ask you about:

  • Your age
  • Your lifestyle
  • Stress
  • Options you have tried

We favour Institut simply because they have proven to give the high standard of results that we require.

Beware of Harsh Products

You will be familiar with the term “drying out” pimples or acne spots. Many acne treatments do just that – they dry the spot out.

However, acne and pimples are caused by the bacteria which lives and thrives in clogged and congested environments within the pore or follicle. Surprisingly, the more you “dry out” a spot the less relief you get. Products designed to “dry” the skin do just that – leaving a flaking and often irritated skin with the same amount of acne or pimples.

Our skin care regime is designed to remove bacteria, remove dead skin and allow the skin to normalise. More simply, by removing the congesting dead skin cells, the bacteria cannot survive.
